micchami dukkadam - મિચ્ચામી દૂકડમ - ક્ષમા પ્રાર્થના - Gujarati - English

|| Shri Ganeshay NamaH ||
|| Hari OM ||

Micchami dukkadam, is one of the important spiritual practice of Jain Dharma. It is a result of inner reflection of a truth seeker in which one is able to recall if s/he has done any harm in any form be it verbal, physical or even mentally cursing anyone.

It can be closely related to another important practice of Self Reflection or introspection known as pratikramaNa. pratikramaNa would generally be understood as to negate or do pratikramaNa of those issues that one has done ati-kramaNa i.e. done in excess. ati means 'excess', here it means 'that which is done in excess'. It is a daily practice. So when one introspects about the past actions of yesterday, one realises that one might be obsessed with some result or has wrongly hurt someone, or is hurt by someone's behaviour, then one neutralises the negative emotions in one's heart and mind by a spiritual process like forgiveness or begging for forgiveness or by blessing someone i.e. wishing for good or those being hurt or those who have hurt or by simply being witness of thoughts and emotions and let them pass by thereby releasing them and making one feel light in heart, as if a burden is removed. This also helps one retain physical health as mind is healthy and in sound condition. Another spiritual meaning of pratikramaNa can be 'to attack (oneself) without attacking'. Here the word 'attack' means to be aware and alert by being witness. It means the one should not be absent minded and let emotions control one's actions. As explained earlier, by being witness, one's thoughts and emotions can be released. It also does make one's heart soft and fills it with deep peace and retains a sense of awareness throughout the day (if done properly and diligently everyday).

Coming back to Micchami Dikkadam, if in such daily spiritual practice, even if little residue is left or that one needs to physically apologize for any kind of wrong doing, then once a year, a day is reserved. This day is the last day of paryushana in which Jains fast for inner purity. So after getting purified (inwardly), one meets or calls up friends and relatives and with deep respect of all living beings, one begins the conversation with the self explanatory words 'Micchami Dukkadam' and gets reciprocated with same words. Micchami dukkadam is also helpful to those who do not do pratikramaNa or regular basis.

While there are mistakes which one know to have committed, there are mistakes and sins which one does not realise and so one's heart does not feel guilty or them. Hence Micchami Dukkadam can be extended to all living being including nature and anything that has jiva in it.

However, most important person to whom we can never repay his debts is sadguru. Hence we must also ask for forgiveness to him too, as it is the guru who protects his disciples from unseen forces,  covers our errors and protects us from getting sidetracked. Guru's grace is incomparable and we often do not recognise it. When one does, one is left speechless, as words are too little to describe guru's grace.

Tirthankara's hold special place in Jain's heart, hence Micchami Dukkadam has to be done to them too.

The ideal way of life is to rise above likes and dislikes. It helps one not to do ati-kramaNa (doing excess). Here, ati-kramaNa does not mean excess expression of negative emotions, but also positive emotions like love, etc, as one has to rise above emotions. Divine emotions help one transcend beyond mind easily. So the ultimate aim, in my humble opinion, is to not let anything enter into our mind so that there will not be any need to practice pratikramaNa and reach the ideal state as taught by the great tirthankara-s and be a 'Jina' in a true sense.

There are many sects and sub-sects within Jainism. Each one has their own day of practising paryushan and for saying micchAmi Dukkadam.

With prayers and gratitude of this beautiful spiritual practice aimed as inner purification, let us do 'Micchami Dukkadam'. Please find a prayer which one may find helpful in one's spiritual progress.

Meaning of 'Hari OM' from Advaita Standpoint

Hari OM is a short form for 'Hari OM Tat Sat'

Om is beyond 3 gunas and goes into turiya state. From OM Maya was created. OM is the representation of Nirguna Brahman. It is the only Mantra that can effortlessly (in hindi: sahajta se) establish or merge the seeker in Nirvikalp Samadhi.

Hara means to remove troubles / bondages / Doshas / Granthis. Hari means one who removes troubles and bondages i.e. Remover of bondage.

so hari is Remover of Bondage
Aum / Om is one which takes one beyond Gunas in to turiya. All 3 Gunas (Satva, Rajas, Tamas) are doshas and OM takes one above these doshas, breaking Hriday Granthi, breaking bondages into the Realm of Atman / Brahman which is Sat-Chit-Ananda. I would collectively call Dosha, bondages, granthis as bondages (Bandhan).

So, Can I translate it as (My salutations (pranams) to) OM, the remover of Bondages, who takes one into the realm of Sat-Chit-Ananda Atman.

Hari is also connected with Shri Vishnu, who is the remover of bondages, granthis, etc.

What is the meaning of word 'Darshan'?

When we say (in Hindi):

'मुझे ईश्वर के दर्शन करने है '

Common meaning and Translation is:

'I want to have vision of God.',

Now, let's analyze a common statement:

'I am going to the temple to have vision of God'

Here, Darshan generally means 'To see'

Now the question is, when: why after going to temple we join hands and then close eyes???

... and if at all we want to see, where to see and where to go?

Closing eyes, to me means that the same God is within us whom we re worshiping outside as an image or idol and go go deep inside us.

Darshan means 'to know' and not 'to see'

Another question is:

What will you call Darshan shastras? 'To see' shastras or 'to know' shastras. The knower of darshan shastras is called as darshan shastri.

I recall a discourse where a Swamiji says, Darshan means to know. If you think it is 'to see' then what does Darshan shastra mean? Do you go to a place with lots of mirrors, some concave, some convex, reflecting funny fat or slim or stretched, etc images??

In Gita Sri Krishna says, My Birth and Karma are divine and those who know me and my karma are not different from me.

The correct meaning of Darshan is 'to know' and not 'to see'.

Wishing You Merry Christmas And Happy New Year

Wishing You Merry Christmas
And
A Prosperous New Year

We all celebrate religious occasions. Do we know the real meaning of Religion?

What is Religion?

Religion has become an integral part of human civilization. Religion is also known as faith. The English word 'religion' has Latin Origin, from the word 'religare'. Religare means 'reunion'. So the original root of religion is 'union'. If religion is 'reunion'; in the beginning there must have been a union, but many people have forgotten this meaning. The foundation of religion is to be united. The question is with whom to be united.

In religious thought people want to be united with a holy way of life, with the goal of life, and ultimately, with God. Different religions have different names of God. The concept of God is also in the philosophy of Yog. The root meaning of Yog is 'to be united with'. Yog, like religion, seeks reunion. Freedom from misery can only be achieved by reuniting with the source.

Ultimately all religions presuppose that we were once united with God, absorbed in God consciousness, but now we are separate from this divine consciousness. This separation arose in ignorance, because of our forgetfulness. Our minds play a mischievous role to create this separateness. Separation is also caused by the free will given to every human being.

Free will can take us away form God. It can be thought of as the play of Maya, as the Hindus describe it. Maya is the illusive power that prevents people from experiencing reality. Union was the beginning, in the middle there was separation, but this separation is not real, it is only apparent. The end must be reunification.

Consider Ocean and the wave. Are waves ever separate from the ocean? The answer is no. The waves remind us of the ocean; the waves are born on the lap of ocean, live there and ultimately merge into the ocean. The ocean is the reality. As waves appear and disappear, ordinary people are fascinated; they notice only the waves without comprehending the vastness of ocean. The ocean and the waves are creator and creation. When you live with the consciousness of wave (individuality) and forget ocean (totality), you are ignorant, mistaking the apparent reality for the ultimate one. In life this kind of ignorance creates illusion, comparison, ego, emotion and as a result, many negative situation arise.

When you want to unite with the source again, this is the realm of religion – reunion. Reunion is possible by transforming our minds and our lives.

Swami Vivekananda defined religion beautifully. He said, “Religion is the manifestation of the perfection that already exists in man.” Thus, perfection is just the experience of divinity or godhood, which is already there, but we are separated from these divine qualities. If we try consciously, intelligently, to go back to the source, we will be united with God.

On this holy occasion, I humbly pray, may we all be reunited with the source, with God.

Namaste

I Want Happiness

A devotee asked God "I want Happiness"

God replied. Remove 'I', that is EGO

'Want' is a DESIRE, which is the cause of SUFFERING. Remove it as well

What is left is 'HAPPINESS'

Hindu Culture and women.

Hindu culture opens doors to spirituality, whose goal is moksha - Self Realization. Ancient saints created concepts in such a way that if one applies them, it brings one closer to self realization. For Self Realization, Renunciation is very important (atleast mental). Keeping all ill-practices against women aside, women do not need to take renunciation (I do not say they cannot or do not deserve). The life of women is such that it is very easy for them to progress spiritually.

Hinduism teaches that Karma (action) should be done with the spirit or detachment or acting as an instrument of God or only for God. It teaches to give responsibility to God. The feeling of ‘Me’ and ‘mine’ are not good for spiritual progress. This increases or sustains the ego and spirituality is to dissolve ego (sense of individuality) and be merged in totality. So, technically parents do not have right to name their kids. They can take care of kids and give the best they can, educate them, but when time comes, they even need to drop their attachment with kids and other family members, later on even with their own body. This is difficult to understand. It takes time and dedicated study of scriptures and meditate regularly.

In earlier days, new born babies were taken to saints for blessings and saints were requested to give suitable name of baby. Saints with their divine vision (which they get after intense meditation) can see the nature of baby and then used to name baby which suits his/her character. Unfortunately, today, these types of saints are found rare and if found are less active with society.

Even today, where people are not much interested in spirituality and just try to take pride of their religion, or choose to be an atheist, traces of Renunciation are found in day-to-day activities. Kanya-Daan (donation of daughter during marriage) and naam-karan sanskar or naam karan vidhi (naming procedure of child) are to name a few. Unfortunately, it is just followed mechanically, without proper or no understanding. Parents pre-decide the names and mother give it to sister-in-law to include this chosen name in the five options which she will give.

Living with the spirit of detachment is one of the core teachings of Hinduism.

(This is author’s reply to a comment on post Women - Spiritual significance and advantage of being female enquiring why parents do not have right to name their baby).

Need for God’s Love

Everybody, whether he/she believes in god or not, leaves for happiness and freedom. Is there anyone who does not like to be happy? All our activities likes building bank balance, and investments in mutual funds or property, etc are because we do not want to be in trouble. Trouble induces sadness. So dukha-nrivritti is nothing but sukha. This samsara goes on in a quest to be happy. If given freedom, one will always choose work or object which one likes (i.e. makes one happy).

Nature of Atman is Sat-Chit-Ananda.

Out of this, ananda (happiness) is easily experienced by us in practical life. But this ananda has 'vikara' i.e. it depends upon external person or object which is not permanent.

On Surrendering to God, one’s attachment with worldly objects decreases, ego begins to melt. This makes one’s mind light and one begins to experience divine love. This love is long lasting, since it does not depend upon anything else, unlike general happiness which is temporary. Detachment from 5 senses and it’s objects instantly induces peace and bliss. This is vairagya – absence of ‘bhogya padartha’.

E.g. you enjoy ice-cream, but that enjoyment exist only till you eat ice-cream.

When both happiness and God’s love are compared, one finds that God’s love is more deep and long lasting.

----

While meditating on God or Brahman or Atman, one experiences that he/she is different from thoughts and 5 senses which constantly pull him in extrovert direction. He/she begins to dis-identify from them. This dis-identification brings one peace.

In the case of bhakta, he compares everything with God and gives more important to God’s holy name, thus unknowingly detaching himself from sense objects and thoughts.

Mind becomes calm and filled with peace and love. This triggers brain to release harmones which induce peace and calmness. Body rejuvenates, and self healing is accelerated. Diseases of emotional origin begin to cure and one have less chance of them developing them. Since brain refreshes, psycho-somatic diseases also does not happen. Digestion increases and one becomes balanced, emotionally and physically.

In today's age of anxiety, stress, tension and excessive competition, it is extremely necessary to live a Spiritual Life (of Prayer, Surrender and Meditation) – Read this

Some scientific explanation.

---

Brain waves, which in day time are vibrating in beta frequency (concrete thinking), now shifts to alpha, in which both left and right hemispheres are active, then goes to thetha, where one experiences deep spiritual connection, then to delta, in which one becomes un-aware of his body, similar to deep sleep, but is conscious.

Women – Spiritual significance and advantage of being female.

India has rich spiritual culture. This misfortune of harassing on women is due to the fact that we have lost our faith in scriptures and no-body reads and understands scriptures.

Indian Rich Tradition has the example of great Saints Maitri, and Gargi, who have renounced the world and were, realized souls. King Janak , the videhi (one without the body sense) sat at the feet of his female servant Sulabha for Brahma Jnana (Knowledge of Self Realization).

There is Meerabai, Radha and lot more who have realized Brahman. We Chant the name ‘Radhe-Krishna’ and ‘Sita-Ram’ and not ‘Krishna-Rashe’ or ‘Ram-Sita’. This signifies the value of women.

Dharma-Artha-Kama and Moksha should be following in the ascending order. Today, nobody is interested in Moksha, and dharma. So just artha (money) is earned by any means without the foundation of dharma. Then it is used to fulfill our desires (the way we want). Without the knowledge of shastras and deterioration of Dharma, women were feeling suffocation due to being 'jailed' in Moral, Cultral and 'Spiritual' cages, without understanding. This pressure of 'need to be free' or 'freedom' increased from generation to generation and by the western influence, today, women are now more liberated and are found in all areas of work.

Un-fortunately, it was women who criticized women more than men.

There is no question about the talent and potential of women, but today’s Girls regard house work as 'inferior' and 'dis-grace' since they think that this is only the work of illiterate village women and not of highly educated ones.

If you see our culture, the biggest ‘dana’ (donation) of Samsari is 'kanya-dana' and only women has the capacity to re-adjust to a new surrounding, take multiple responsibility and bind the family together by Bhava.

Their qualities like tolerance, receptivity and following the instructions of her husband and other elders, being dependant upon him, etc ensure their spiritual progress. They do not need to put much effort since in meditation. Any one seriously meditating for Self-Realization will know that one needs these qualities, which are present, by birth in women. Un-fortunately, today’s women, by being independent and self-earning, are loosing this qualities, thus resulting in increasing of divorce cases.

Everybody wants freedom, but nobody wants to realize his/her true nature (Self Realization) which is eternal freedom. Every activity one does is either fear motivated or it is to be safe or happy i.e. one should not have ‘dukha’. Nobody cares for Self Realization which is eternal bliss, peace and immortality. (Mental) Renunciation is necessary for spiritual progress. But nobody wants to renounce his/her desires or Ego. Even people inclined towards religion and spirituality want both ‘Bhoga’ and ‘Yog’. If both were possible, then metropolitan cities would be empty and there would be sky scrappers in himalayas. But this does not happen, since many of us does not wants to or find any need to be spiritual or to meditate. It is the ego which does not allow us to surrender to God or Guru and doubting and demanding mind adds fuel to the fire.

If you notice, Hindu Culture does not even give rights to parents to name their child. It is sister in law of the mother, who in near future will leave this house after getting married. Renunciation is found in all activities of Hindu Culture. It also encourages ‘Seva’ for the good of all with the spirit of detachment. Karma-kand is for the good of all, says Sri Ramana Maharshi in Sri Ramana Gita.

Male child was needed not just because he will help the parents in old days, but also for Guru-Shishya parampara. Father becomes a Guru and son his disciple, and the tradition passes from one generation to another. Female child were not criticized or killed. They were considered as a part of Goddess. they are necessary for evolution of men from spirituality. Mother, by giving birth to a soul gives him / her an opportunity for spiritual evolution. They give their father an opportunity to give biggest dana – ‘kanya-dana’ (donation) of daughter, whom is very dear to him, during her marriage. From spiritual standpoint, father and mother of female child are very lucky to have this divine opportunity. How can she be a curse or a liability? Can she be?

Anchor and Fish – Mysticism of Religious Symbols

anchor_cross

In the Christian church many people believe that the anchor and fish was an important religious symbol in the early days, and there is a lot of discussion about it. So what does the symbolism of the anchor and fish mean in early Christianity? Jesus taught many people and most of them were fishermen. You may have read many stories about Jesus serving people fish, and about how Jesus helped Peter to catch more fish. What does this mean?

Fish live in water; without water fish cannot live. There is a beautiful teaching of Sant Kabir:

je jake sharan rakhe take rakhe laj

ulat jalame machali chale baha gaya gaja raj.

“One who surrenders is protected, just like a tiny fish goes against the current, but a big huge elephant goes down in the stream.”

It is a really thought-provoking example. Why can a tiny fish with so little strength go against the current, while an elephant with so much strength falls down? It is because a tiny fish has completely surrendered itself to water. The life of the fish is the life of surrender. It surrenders completely to water. In water it is born, in water it lives, and ultimately it dies in water. It cannot exist without water. Similarly, surrender yourself to God. You were born in God and exist because of God andwill go back to God.

Some fish live in mud, but the mud does not touch or stick to the fish. If your life is dedicated to God you will be free from worldly mud; nothing can touch you, and you will be free.

One can go against the current of the river. Although the pranic energy in the body naturally flows from the top of the head down towards the feet, there are those who

know how to go against the current (that is, taking the pranic energy upward, not downward). This is the spiritual meaning of being a fish.

In yogic scriptures, inhalation and exhalation are symbolized as two fish swimming in two streams. It is said in Kailasha Tantra:

Ganga yamunayor madhye dvau matsau charatah sada

Tau matsau bhakshayat yastu sa bhavet matsya sadhaka

“In the Ganga and the Yamuna there are two fish swimming continuously. One who can eat these two fish, is truly a sincere seeker.”

In the left and right nostril, in the ida and pingala canals (nadis), are the two holy rivers, the Ganga and the Yamuna. There are two fish constantly swimming in these two rivers, which comprise the breath. The breath is flowing through the left and right nostrils, ida and pingala canals of the spine. Breath control brings beauty and success in life This is one meaning of the fish symbolism.

Jesus' giving fish to people symbolizes complete nutrition. We need nutrition for the body and nutrition for the mind. Jesus said: "Peter, be the fisher of men." Here fish symbolize human beings in the ocean of the world. The statement, "Peter, be the fisher of men," refers to bringing people from the worldly ocean and directing them towards God.

The anchor along with fishing are always associated with a boat. It is also said in the Bhagavatam: life is a boat and the world is the ocean. This lifeboat will flounder in the waves, but if the boat is anchored on the shore, even if there is a strong wind or storm, nothing will happen to the boat. Similarly, the boat of life should be anchored. My beloved Guruji Swami Shri Yukteshwarji said: "Human life is ever unreliable until it is anchored in the Divine." Therefore, let this boat of our life be anchored in the Divine. If the mind is anchored in Christ, if the mind is anchored in God, then the mind has nothing to do but to remember God, and to do good. This is the beauty of human life. So the anchor is symbolic of reaching the goal of life through breath control - to anchor life in Divinity. With the anchor and fish together, let our lives be dedicated to God with steadiness and harmony.

Wishing You Merry Christmas And A Prosperous New Year

Wishing You Merry Christmas

And

A Prosperous New Year

(Note: Updated on 22.12.2010)

On this Christmas, Let us pray to God to be Baptized (transformed) by the savior of God and turn our mind towards divinity. Let us be filled with the divine light of love, compassion and peace.

---

Faithful men are filled with divine light by God through John-the savior (or Sat-Guru), who is the witness of divine light, and turn their mind inwards and can hear the sound Aum / Amen (knocking) sees the real luminous body of John.

Such men, now full of divine light, like that of John, strongly believing in existence of Light – the life of this universe, are baptized or absorbed in the holy stream of the light and sound. Symbolically, Baptism also means to have a second birth of man, since it transforms negativity or darkness into divinity. (See John: 1:6, 8, 23 & Revelation 3:14, 20)

He, who is baptized understands the creation of Darkness (Maya), becomes aware of his own state. He becomes one with God. (See John 10:30)

Without this transformation due to faith, men can never comprehend the kingdom of God – His true nature, which was there in the beginning of universe.

Until men is baptized, man will be born again and again, since he has not seen the kingdom of God (realized his true nature) (See John, 1:9, 3:3)

---

On this Christmas, Let us pray to God to be Baptized (transformed) by the savior of God and turn our mind towards divinity. Let us be filled with the divine light of love, compassion and peace.

---

With Lots of Joy,

INDIASPIRITUALITY

Notes:

The peculiar nature and voice of this flow of light is referred as sacred rivers by different sects as Ganga, Yamuna (by Hindus) or Jordan (by Christians).

Ref:

King James Bible:

Revelation: 3:14, 20

These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

John: 10:30

I and my Father are one.

John: 1:6, 8, 23

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord.

John: 1:9, 3:3

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

More on Bhagavad Gita – Common myths busted

Gita is only for Hindus and others elite classes of men like Brahmins

Bhagavad Gita is for all. Bhagavad Gita covers Karma, Bhakti and Jnana. Bhagavad Gita can also be studied from the standpoint of Yog.

Different persons have different mindsets and have different spiritual maturity. Some have a prakriti of Karma, some like to sing bhajans and worship any form of God, some like to peacefully and contemplate on their true nature, i.e. Brahman / Atman – sadhaka practicing in this way qualify for Jnana Marg. Some people want scientific explanation, which can be found and explored on Yog. Gita covers everything. Gita says, there is no need to adapt to any particular path, nor does one need to change the basic nature (which one has by birth – soul has carry forwarded it into this life). Just follow any path that suits you. All lead and end to the same destination of SELF Realization.

Hence Gita can be practically applied by all.  Gita is for all.

Bhagavad Gita is not dharma Shastra but moksha shastra.

Gita cannot be and should not be confined by the boundaries of religion or dharma. It does not teach moral values like say truth and do not say lie. There are different dharma shastras like Manu Smriti, which give the moral and ethical code of conduct. It gives the immortal knowledge of SELF Realization. Hence Gita cannot be confined and restricted to only Hinduism. One must cross or drop the boundaries of dharma to understand the teachings of Gita.

Lord Krishna teaches one to fight, hence it inspires one to do hinsa (inspires violence).

Gita never teaches one to be violent. This will be clear when one surrenders to God (not only Lord Krishna but any form of God or to Brahman), and out of his Grace and Mercy (Ishvar Krupa) experiences detachment. It is the association of oneself with mind, body and Ego that one thinks to do actions and accept responsibility. The very nature of advaita sadhana is such that one has to be neutral to the impulses of senses and thoughts and the scenes created by mind. One silently and smoothly shifts back the awareness from the thoughts to the mantra Aum or ask ‘Who am I’ (practice self enquiry). How can one who is neutral and does not even think about his own body, leaving it to God / prarabhdha can indulge into cruel activites and motivates others in wrong direction? A Realized saints never thinks of such cruelty. Think. He is the observer of his own body. He is detached from his body and mind and ego have melted into Brahman. Even a sadhaka does not embed violent thoughts into others.

Only those who want to establish any cult or a new system or a foundation try to attract people by using business tactics. A renunciate never does that, simply because he has renounced everything and dedicated his life for Self Realization.

Gita gives this knowledge of attaining Moksha. Gita also teaches not to be coward and run away from the situation, but to face it, tolerate the impact upon the mind by being neutral, surrendering to the will of God and doing what is necessary at that time, as taught by shastras. People criticizing Gita take things word-by-word and only believe what they see like a toad born in the well never aware of the word sea, will not accept that there is something much bigger than well. Lord says that my birth and karma are divine and the one who knows my karma and my purpose of birth knows me He is one with me – a realized saint can only be one with Brahman.
One the other note, Lord Krishna never told Arjun to fight and after the war is over, I will give you knowledge. First Lord gave the knowledge, cleared all doubts and then instructed him to fight, with the knowledge of Atman.

Mahabharata is the only war in the entire history, where the King Lord Krishna (who does not fight himself) is on one side (with Pandavas) and his entire army along with horses and elephants and all kinds of weapons are fighting for the enemy side. (i.e. with Kauravs).

Lord Krishna says to leave all religions and only come to me

Lord Krishna in Gita says, “sarva dharma parityajya, maam ekam sharanam vraja”. People have wrongly translated this verse word by word   “ leave all dharma and come only to me”. Sanskrit word vraj means “to go” and not “to come”. So one should go within, as Atman is within us. Lord Krishna never said come to me, as a person or as a saint or as a God. He said it from the standpoint of supreme reality i.e. Brahman.

If one wants to leave then leave what is not Atman i.e. you. Am I body? NO. Then leave the attachment with the body. Am I mind? No. then leave the attachment with mind. In the same way, Ask – Am I Intellect, Jiva? No. Then leave the attachment with Intellect and Jiva. Then Who Am I? Dive deep within, and Atman will spontaneously self-illumine itself. It is pure consciousness, bliss and peace. So leave para-dharma i.e. leave the association with that which is not 'I', by being an observer. Sat-Chit-Anand are dharma of Atman. It cannot be renounced. One cannot renounce himself, but only that which he is not.

Atman has no attributes. It is one without second, without beginning or end. No one can limit and cage Atman in boundaries. It cannot be described but one can experience it by merging oneself into it.

True Understanding

The ways of the guru are often a mystery. Once a guru gave his disciple a bird and told him, Kill the bird, but make sure that no one sees you killing it.

Ordinarily, one may wonder why a guru would want an innocent bird to be killed. Even if one follows the order, one might not be comfortable with taking a life. However, sometimes the guru gives assignments to the disciples to test how much of the teaching they were able to understand. No doubt a student who does not question the integrity of the teacher succeeds in following the orders of the teacher.

This particular disciple decided to follow the orders of the guru and left with the bird in his hands. After some time had passed, he came back holding the little bird, which was still alive. The guru asked him what happened.

My master, you asked me to kill the bird when no one else was looking, the dutiful disciple replied. But just as I was about to kill, I saw the little bird was looking at me. So I quickly covered his eyes. Next I realized that I was looking at the bird. So I covered my eyes also. Then I remembered that I still could not do it, because the all pervading Lord, whose eyes were everywhere, was watching me. Therefore I could not carry out your orders and I am humbly returning the bird to you.

The guru was quite pleased with how well the disciple understood the teaching and said, Your education is complete. Now you can go.

REFLECTION

The knowledge of Gods omnipresence allows us to pass through life’s trials and tests with ease. In every moment, feel that God  and masters are looking at you. If one is firm in this knowledge, one will be free from all negatives. For example, a child will not do anything wrong when he knows that his mother is watching him. Similarly, how can we do wrong when God is constantly looking at us?

The value of Freedom

In a small village many years ago, there was a man who was imprisoned for a very long time for a mistake he committed when he was young. Everyday he sat in his lonely cell dreaming of the day he would be free. Then one day he heard the jingling of keys, looking up he saw the prison guard unlocking the cell door. The guard told him that he had now paid his debt and he is free to leave. Then he gave him a small sum of money and instructed him to use it wisely.

The man had only walked a short distance when he saw a person who was selling birds that were in a cage. The newly freed prisoner quickly walked over to the street vendor and asked him what the price would be if he purchased all twenty birds in the cage. The vendor told him that if any one was willing to buy all the birds, he would give a discount-then he quoted him a price. Reaching into his pocket, the prisoner checked his money and was happy to find that he had enough to buy them all.

Then, after paying for the birds, with great joy he deliberately set each one of them free, one by one. The man who sold the birds looked very surprised and asked the man why he paid so much of money just to set the birds free. The jubilant young man answered, "I did it because T too had been confined to a prison cage, and I have come to know the value of freedom."

REFLECTION:

We are imprisoned by our thoughts and attachments in this world. One who becomes free from this bondage tastes everlasting bliss and in turn helps others to become free.

Awareness

Who is the one that is giving the inspiration?,

Who gives your answers?

Who has given the quality of love to mother and father?

Who is the one nearest to you?

The answer is God.

Then where is God?

God is inside us.

You know that – this is Sun. The Sun is outside, but the knowledge that – this is sun - is inside us.

All the knowledge we have is due to your awareness or consciousness. There are many people dying each second, but do we feel sorrow? Many children are born each second. Do we feel Joy? No.

So things that happen in front of us or to the ones we are attached, does make an impact on us. While sleeping, thieves rob our house, but we are not affected at that time, since our consciousness is in dream state.

Awareness or consciousness is all that matters and that consciousness is not this body but the God within us.

Divine Love

Spirituality is all about removing of things that are not us. According to Vivek Chudamani – a spiritual scripture by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, spirituality is disconnecting or de-tuning or not clinging to things which is not ‘I’ or God or SELF or Atman.

Love spontaneously expresses in one when emotions and ‘clinging to emotions’ are removed either by de-tuning (neglecting) them or by surrendering to God. It is just like piling the layers of onion one by one and at last, nothing remains. It is not cultivating more and more love but to remove others emotions and thoughts and love will express itself. You will be filled with bliss.

According to Advaita Shastras, whatever you see outside is a mental projection. Divine Love is unconditional. Love has the qualities of renunciation. It does not try to pull or stick to anybody nor does is feel the absence of anything. A person from whom God expresses divine love does not try to bind anybody. Such a person is calm, undisturbed and mentally very strong. Love results into the uprooting of dis-satisfied desires. But this love is given by God to those who surrender everything to him and have a strong faith in Him. He/She does not have any other wish, on the contrary, he/she surrenders each and every emotion, thought to him. Then God transforms all emotions into divine love. Such persons are really rare to find. Who is ready to surrender everything to God? Love is a symbol of Renunciation. Love represents/symbolizes God.

Qualities of Sthitaprajna

The sthitaprajna is like the vijnani. The sthitaprajna’s experience of samadhi is sahaja, or spontaneous and effortless. The sthitaprajna is a free soul, ever steady in knowledge of Self. The sthitaprajna sees the presence of God not merely in the good and noble but also in the wicked and ignoble. The state of steady wisdom is a state of transcendence that does not overlook, rationalize, or destroy the lower values of life but fulfills them all, just as adulthood does not deny childhood but completes it.

A sthitaprajna is also known as a jivanmukta, or one who is truly free while still living. Although the realization of truth is private and cannot be communicated to others, the sthitaprajna can be identified by his or her actions, habits, and character as a tree is known by its leaves, flowers, or fruit. The Bhagavad Gita describes the character of the sthitaprajna as the following:

1] The sthitaprajna is dvandatita, or free from the conflicts of the pairs of opposites, such as pain and pleasure, virtue and vice, honour and dishonour, and good and evil. In short, the sthitaprajna is free from all attachments and aversions.

2] The sthitaprajna demonstrates the reality of the Self the divinity of all beings, and the unity of all existence through his or her conduct.

3] Steady in wisdom, the sthitaprajna enjoys the constant bliss of the Self, irrespective of the changing phenomena of the universe . The rise and fall of mind and pain and pleasure of body never make the sthitaprajna waver in steadiness of wisdom.

4] Though behaving like an ordinary person, the sthitaprajna is ever conscious of the reality of oneness.

5] Though engaged in actions, being free from ego and free from motive, the sthitaprajna is not a doer of actions. Though having a physical body, the sthitaprajna is merely a dweller within the body and is unidentified with it.

6] Firmly grounded in the wisdom of the one Self, the sthitaprajna is at peace and ease with everything in all situations.

7] The wisdom of the sthitaprajna is wisdom of a cosmic oneness with all beings that cannot be contained in any temple or exhaustively described by any scripture.

8] The sthitaprajna is not bound by the injunctions of the scriptures, the traditions of society, or the laws of ethics. Yet the sthitaprajna’s freedom does not impose itself on anyone, nor does it violate the rules of morality and ethics.

9] The sthitaprajna does not belong to a particular culture, sect, nation, or society; the sthitaprajna is for all beings of all times.

10] Whatever the sthitaprajna does is conducive to the welfare of all beings. When the sthitaprajna does good, he or she has no expectations or desires. The sthitaprajna’s very nature is to do good.

11] The sthitaprajna is a seer of truth, no longer its seeker. The sthitaprajna is not just pure but purity itself. A person conscious of his or her purity is also conscious of impurity. The sthitaprajna is not just holy but holiness itself, not just a knower of truth but the very embodiment of truth. The Bhagavad Gita declares: “The yogi who is happy within, who rejoices within, and who is illumined within attains freedom in Brahman, himself becoming one with Brahman.”

12] While steady wisdom indicates seeing action in inaction and inaction in action, it does not stand for a philosophy of inaction. The sthitaprajna continues to act, lest by following his or her example, the vast majority of people should be led to practice inertia in the name of spirituality.

13] The sthitaprajna lives on the borderline between absolute and relative consciousness.

14] The sthitaprajna is a jnani, a bhakta, and a yogi.

15] Ever established in the state of yoga, the sthitaprajna remains in constant union with God and, at the same time, is the ideal exemplar of karma-yoga, demonstrating steady wisdom through every action.

16] The sthitaprajna’s knowledge of Ultimate Reality is universal and dynamic.

17] The sthitaprajna’s spiritual vision is integral and all-embracing.

18] For the sthitaprajna, God is both immanent and transcendent at the same time. Dedicated service is as important as offerings of worship, and meditation is no less an action than everyday activity

Prayer and Meditation

Jesus encouraged his disciples to pray in groups and pray alone. Praying in groups and praying along are the two aspects of divine communication using thoughts and feelings. Prayer with thoughts and feeling is the common art of communication with the divine. Prayer without thought- meditation is an advanced art of divine communication.

Prayer and meditation were the subtle teachings of Jesus to help every follower to make progress along the path of spirituality and love.

The prayer of Jesus is a prayer for forgiveness, a manifestation of his love and compassion. If we wish to grow spiritually we must develop this forgiveness, Instead of reacting to insult of injury we must accept them as the love of God. Ignorant people commit mistakes, but mistakes are not for the sake of mistakes, they are for correction. When you make a mistake do not justify your mistake. When others make mistakes, due to ignorance help them to be free from them. Act intelligently. In a loving way point out their mistakes. Do not criticize others. If you look at the negatives of people more and more, your mind will be filled with negatives.

Live a life of prayer and a life of surrender, a life of constant god communion. This is breath and soul of Christianity. Christianity in true spirit is the religion of continuous love and prayer. The Bible advises us to pray ceaselessly. We must not waste a single moment of single opportunity, because life is precious, the gift of God
